On July 20, 1895, the dodge brothers, Horace and John, received their first patent for a machine part. But it wasn't a car part. The first wheeled vehicle to bear the Dodge name was a bicycle – the predominant personal transportation machinery of the time. It was an E&D product, named for their early Canadian company, Evans and Dodge. By 1901 the dodge brothers had secured a reputation for superb craftsmanship and were producing components for early automobiles. They opened a shop on Beaubien Street in Detroit and began their success in the burgeoning automobile industry. Dodge, now at Hastings and Monroe, received its first major automotive contract in 1902. The Olds Motor Works ordered 3000 transmissions from Dodge for the first Olds car. Soon John and Horace Dodge were consulted as experts in automotive parts and they abandoned the bicycle business to concentrate on this new industry. In 1903, the Dodge brothers met a young entrepreneur. They were so impressed with this Henry Ford that they turned down all other work to tool up to produce his first automobile. Dodge produced every part for the 1903 Ford Model A Runabout but the wheels and cabin and started down a prosperous road beside the Ford Motor Company. For 11 years, Ford was the primary customer of Dodge and both companies succeeded beyond all dreams.Dodge was responsible for the automotive styling change that would forever affect the way American cars look and handle. Cab forward design moved the wheels to the corners and integrated all portions of the car. This elegant design step provided consumers while at the same time improving maneuverability and handling. And on top of it all, delivered a striking look for the vehicles.
